Is eavestrough and gutters the same?

Yes, it is the exact same.

Eavestroughs and gutters are essentially the same thing. While there might be some minor regional differences in terminology, they both refer to the system of 'troughs' installed along the edge of a roof to collect and redirect rainwater away from a building.

The term "eavestrough" is more common in Canada, while "gutter" is more frequently used in the United States. However, regardless of the term used, the purpose and function of these systems are identical.

Why does ice damming occur?

Ice damming is a common winter problem that occurs when snow melts on a roof and then refreezes, creating a 'dam' made of ice that prevents snowmelt from draining off the roof. This can cause water to back up under the shingles and leak into the home, causing damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

It is usually caused by an inadequate eavestrough system or debris clogging the eavestrough.

Here's how it happens:

Snow accumulates on the roof.
Heat from the home meltins the snow. This can be caused by inadequate insulation in the attic, or by heat escaping from living spaces below.
The melted water flows down the roof towards the eaves.
The eaves of the roof are colder than the upper sections. This is because they are not insulated by the attic space and are exposed to the cold air.
The melted water refreezes when it reaches the cold eaves, forming a dam of ice.
More snow melts and the water backs up behind the ice dam.
The water can then leak under the shingles and into the home.

It is important to take steps to prevent ice dams from forming, such as:

Improving insulation in the attic.
Ensuring adequate ventilation in the attic.
Removing snow from the roof after a heavy snowfall.
Removing clutter, debris or leaves from your system
Fixing or replacing your eavestrough with a more adequate system.
